TREED

Finn woke with a start when he heard something smash into the tree trunk just above his head and pine needles rained down on him. He brushed them out of his hair. He realized while he had been sleeping it must have snowed as everything around him was more white than green.

From his high perch, he could see the snowy tundra stretching for miles beyond the edge of the forest.

The dome of the sun was sinking behind the distant snowcapped mountain range.

Soon it would be nightfall.

An object flew at him and almost hit him in the face. At first he thought it was a bird but when he gazed down, he saw a pinecone careening down through the branches.

Finn gazed over at the next tree and saw Ash standing on a branch with another pinecone in his throwing hand. The ape-faced man had a big grin on his face. “Finn, wake up! No sleep!”

Finn shook his fist and shouted, “Ash in big trouble!” He looked for something to throw back but there were no pinecones within reach. He crouched on a bough and peered down through the tree limbs. The ground surrounding the base of the tree was covered in parts by fresh snow but mostly stained with large patches of blood and gore.

The sabertooth cats had eaten most of the horses, leaving the heads and the stripped away hides and bones to be picked over by the nighttime scavengers that would soon be prowling once it was dark.

He moved about the high branches with the grace of a gymnast and kept looking down but didn’t see any sign of the big cats. He looked over at Ash. “Do you see?”

Ash shook his head.

“We go down!” Finn fearlessly dropped through the branches, controlling his fast descent by grabbing tree limbs and quickly releasing them as he swung down to the next branch all the way down for eighty feet. He stopped when he had almost reached the bottom and looked around to make sure there were no sabertooths waiting to pounce on him the second his feet touched the ground.

He dropped down and landed in the snow. He stayed in a crouch and turned his head both ways expecting to be attacked but he wasn’t. Relieved, he stood and walked over to the next tree. He looked up and said, “You come down!”

Ash made his way down the tree and jumped down next to Finn. “What we do now?” Ash asked.

“Horses dead. We go home,” Finn replied.

They traipsed through the snow in search of anything they might be able to take back with them. Each travois was a total loss. The poles were no longer attached and the tarps were ripped and were no use to them.

Finn dug around in the snow but couldn’t find his spear. He looked around but didn’t see any sign of the dead sabertooth, Ash had killed.

Ash located his longbow, but after an extensive search, he wasn’t able to scrounge up a single arrow.
